The students who get in aren't always the most academic. They're the ones who can communicate their passion, reflect meaningfully on their experience, and stay calm and articulate under pressure. Those are skills — and they can be taught

Think like a doctor, not just answer like one

The Clinical Mind Program

Most courses teach you what to say. We teach you how to think — so you can answer anything, not just the question you prepared for

The Excel Medical Clinical Mind Program is a 12-month programme designed for A-Level students who want more than exam tips and interview scripts. While most preparation focuses on the UCAT, personal statements and interview technique, we focus on something most students miss entirely: a genuine, deep understanding of the NHS, medical ethics, professionalism and leadership. Through private podcast episodes paired with live group webinars, students build real knowledge over a full academic year, rather than cramming it in the weeks before interviews. The result is students who don't just recite rehearsed answers, but can think critically, reason through unfamiliar questions, and speak about medicine with genuine confidence and depth. Because the strongest candidates aren't always the most academic — they're the ones who can communicate their passion, reflect meaningfully, and stay calm and articulate under pressure. That's exactly what the Clinical Mind Program is built to develop.

How does the program work?

This is a 12 month program that will launch in November 2026 and will run until the end of November 2027.

As an Excel student you will be given access to a private selection of podcasts that will explore topics within the areas of leadership, communication skills, key NHS topics, medical ethics plus more. These will supplement monthly online live group webinars where we will explore these topics in more detail, answer any questions and trouble shoot your progress.

The aim of this program isn't to teach you what to say but to develop a deeper understanding of topics so that you enter the interviews with pure confidence rather than relying on a script that you've been advised to deliver. All sessions and podcasts will be delivered by Dr Umar Mahmood, the director of Excel Medical and NHS based Paediatric Cardiology consultant. To read more about his background see about me

What do doctors say about preparing with us

"I like to refer to my coaching experience as an 'Umar sandwich'. My interview practice started off by attending the Paediatric Grid Interview Preparation Course and my final preparation was a 1:1 coaching session. With his help I achieved a high score in my subspecialty interview, ranked high and was offered my first choice job."

Paediatric GRID applicant, first post post secured

''Umar was very insightful and gave bespoke and personalised prescriptive coaching that was not generic like the other courses available out there. I felt like he understood who I was as a person and my journey and learned my needs and helped me not only learn how to present myself better but to overcome mental barriers.''

ST3 Paediatrics applicant

"I found this course on Google and honestly thought the comments sounded too good to be true. After attending his GRID interview preparation course I can truly say the comments were not exaggerating. I feel a lot more confident and feel like I have been given a strong foundation to build on."
